General Principles
Science Insights is committed to facilitating responsible access to and reuse of scholarly research while protecting the legitimate rights of authors and other copyright holders.
Journals published by Science Insights operate under an open-access publishing model. Published articles are made freely available online and are licensed to permit reuse in accordance with the licence associated with the article.
Copyright and licensing information should be communicated clearly so that authors and readers can understand their respective rights and responsibilities.
Copyright Ownership
Authors retain copyright in articles published in Science Insights journals unless a different arrangement is expressly required and clearly identified for a particular work.
Publication by a Science Insights journal does not, by itself, require authors to transfer ownership of copyright to the journal or publisher.
Authors remain responsible for ensuring that they have the rights necessary to submit their work for publication and to authorize its publication under the applicable licensing terms.
Publication Rights
By authorizing publication, authors grant the relevant journal and Science Insights the rights necessary to publish, reproduce, distribute, communicate, archive, preserve, index and otherwise make the article available as part of the scholarly record.
These publication rights enable Science Insights and its journals to maintain and disseminate the Version of Record and to provide article content and metadata to appropriate scholarly, preservation, discovery and indexing services.
The granting of these publication rights does not, in itself, transfer copyright ownership from the authors to Science Insights.
Open Access
Articles published in Science Insights journals are made freely accessible online without requiring readers to pay a subscription fee to access the published scholarly content.
Open access is supported by the application of licensing terms that define how published material may be shared and reused.
Users should consult the licence information associated with an individual article when determining the rights applicable to a particular work.
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International
Unless otherwise stated on the individual article, articles published in Science Insights journals are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence .
CC BY 4.0 permits users to share, copy and redistribute licensed material in any medium or format and to remix, transform and build upon the material for any purpose, including commercial purposes, provided that the conditions of the licence are satisfied.
The full terms of the licence are available from Creative Commons .
Attribution
Reuse of material licensed under CC BY 4.0 requires appropriate attribution.
As appropriate to the form of reuse, users should give credit to the original author or authors, identify the source of the material, provide a reference or link to the applicable licence and indicate whether changes have been made.
Attribution must not be presented in a manner that suggests endorsement by the authors, journal or Science Insights of the user, adapted material or particular reuse.
Reuse and Adaptation
Material distributed under CC BY 4.0 may be reused for both commercial and non-commercial purposes in accordance with the conditions of the licence.
Licensed material may also be remixed, transformed or adapted. Where modifications are made, the user should indicate that changes have been made and should otherwise comply with the applicable licence requirements.
Adapted or reused material must not be presented in a misleading manner or in a way that falsely attributes statements, conclusions or endorsement to the original authors, journal or publisher.
Separate permission from Science Insights is generally not required for uses already authorized by the applicable Creative Commons licence.
Author Sharing and Self-Archiving
Authors may share and deposit articles published under CC BY 4.0 in institutional repositories, subject repositories, personal or institutional websites and other appropriate scholarly platforms in accordance with the applicable licence.
Science Insights does not impose an embargo on sharing the published Version of Record where that Version of Record is distributed under CC BY 4.0.
When sharing a published article, authors are encouraged to provide the full citation and DOI or a link to the Version of Record so that readers can identify and access the authoritative published version.
Third-Party Material
The Creative Commons licence associated with an article applies only to material that the relevant rights holder is entitled to distribute under that licence.
Figures, photographs, tables, datasets, illustrations or other third-party material may be subject to separate copyright or licensing conditions.
Where third-party material is excluded from an article's Creative Commons licence, an appropriate credit line, copyright statement or other notice should identify the applicable rights where necessary.
Users wishing to reuse excluded third-party material beyond what is permitted by applicable law must obtain any necessary permission from the relevant copyright holder.
Permissions
Separate permission from Science Insights or the relevant journal is not required for reuse that is already permitted by the Creative Commons licence applicable to the material.
Additional permission may be necessary where the material is specifically excluded from the applicable licence, copyright is held by a third party, the proposed use falls outside the scope of the licence or other rights apply.
Such other rights may include privacy, publicity, trademark, confidentiality or similar rights that are not necessarily granted by a copyright licence.
Users are responsible for determining whether additional permission is required for their intended use.
Version of Record
The Version of Record is the final version of an article formally published by the relevant Science Insights journal.
The Version of Record may be shared and reused in accordance with its applicable licence. Citation of the Version of Record, including its DOI where available, is encouraged to maintain an accurate and traceable scholarly record.
Corrections, retractions or other formal post-publication notices associated with the Version of Record form part of the continuing scholarly record and should be considered when the article is reused or cited.
Licensing Information on Individual Articles
The licence and rights information displayed on an individual article should be consulted when determining the terms applicable to that specific work.
Where an individual article, component or third-party item carries a different licence or rights statement, the terms specifically associated with that material apply.
This framework establishes the general publishing principles of Science Insights but does not override a valid rights statement specifically associated with individual content.
